mourns the loss of a great music legend and presents its most iconic pieces all together in one show

BURBERRY PRORSUM: PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE

The inspiration: Christopher Bailey drew inspiration from the British heritage brand’s bestsellers, which included the iconic trench coat with the signature Burberry check. Titled “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue”, Bailey presented a collection of Burberry staples repurposed for FW16.

The collection: Utilitarian cover-ups (of all shapes and sizes) were paired with sporty numbers. Check, plaid and houndstooth borrowed from the archives were given a modern update as seen on trench coats, parkas and oversized puffer jackets. A sense of versatility with a youthful twist was prominent on the runway as models donned sparkling sequined track jackets.

Hair & make-up: The collection’s makeup aesthetic involved a timely David Bowie tribute, as glittery stardust was sprinkled on the models’ cheekbones and eyes.

Soundtrack: Bowie’s music greeted guests as they entered the venue — another subtle tribute to the British music and fashion legend who passed away the morning of the Burberry show. British musician Benjamin Clementine then performed together with a live orchestra in the centre of the runway as the models walked. His last performance for the brand was in 2014 for the menswear SS15 show.

Top model: Closing the show was Chinese superstar, Kris Wu. This is the musician and actor’s first runway debut.

Something you might have missed: Model Hayett McCarthy paid her own personal tribute to the late Bowie while walking down the runway. McCarthy revealed the word “Bowie” written on the palms of her hands as she approached the photographer’s pit.
