On the last day of London Fashion Week: Marques’ Almeida serves up the attitude and Mother of Pearl hits close to home
MOTHER OF PEARL: TAKING IT HOME
The inspiration: English artist and photographer Nick Waplington’s opus, Living Room, an insight into the country’s rough council estates during the ’90s.
The collection: Nightwear as daywear, and not the usual boudoir dressing we’re used to. Checks and florals came by way of a nightgown-esque ruffled sleeve frock, grandpa-style pyjama bottoms , and a bathrobe-like coat layered over a tracksuit. Between the elevated homewear, breezy chiffon dresses and multitude of drawstring trousers, the adage ‘comfort is key’ definitely held court for creative director Amy Powney’s fall/winter collection.
Something you might have missed: The sportswear detailing on chokers , a fresh take on the recent accessory trend that’s perfect for the gamine girl.
MARQUES’ ALMEIDA: KEEPING IT REAL
The collection: Attitude fuelled everyday wear for the confident woman. Founded by Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida who hail from Portugal, Marques’ Almeida is a brand that’s more concerned with spunk and spirit than winsome clothes. The fall 2016 collection is a medley of oversized jumpers, shirts and puffers styled to proffer a devil-may-care attitude more than anything else, and includes the brand’s signature denim designs finished with raw hems. Effortlessly undone.
Model casting: Instead of professional models, the designers opted for real women instead, their atypical runway physique underscoring the brand messaging: Clothes for the average lady.
Buro loves: The shearling trimmed aqua and blood orange leather jacket. Cut long and oversized with the promise of industrial level warmth, throw it over anything for instant comfort and bonus style points.
